Accessibility Statement — physmat.org

This Accessibility Statement explains how we aim to make physmat.org usable by as many children, parents, teachers, and schools as possible, the standard we are working towards, the honest current state of our accessibility, and how to ask us for help or tell us something is not working. It is written to be read alongside our Privacy Policy.

This service is offered in the United Kingdom. It is not offered in the United States at this time, and we do not target US users.

1. Our commitment

We are building physmat.org for children, and many of those children — and their parents — will use assistive technology such as screen readers, magnification, or keyboard-only navigation. We want the platform to work for them, not just around them.

Our commitment is that:

A child should be able to read a problem, enter an answer, and use the optional AI tutor without needing a mouse or a particular kind of vision or hearing.
Mathematics — the heart of the product — should be spoken correctly by a screen reader, not skipped or read as meaningless symbols.
We treat accessibility as something to design in and test, not to claim. This statement will be updated to reflect what we have actually verified, not what we hope is true.

2. The standard we are working towards

Our target conformance goal is WCAG 2.2 Level AA, aligned with EN 301 549 (the European accessibility standard that adopts WCAG for ICT).

This is the goal we are designing and testing against. It is not a statement that we have achieved it — see §4 for the honest current status.

What "designing towards this" means in practice:

Screen-reader-spoken mathematics (so equations and word problems are not fragmented or silent).
Keyboard operability and visible focus.
Sufficient colour contrast, and never relying on colour alone to convey meaning.
Text resizing / zoom without loss of content.
Headings and page structure that assistive technology can navigate.

3. EAA / microenterprise position

The European Accessibility Act (EAA) sets accessibility requirements for certain services. The EAA contains a microenterprise consideration: a service provider that is a microenterprise — broadly, fewer than 10 staff AND annual turnover or balance-sheet total not exceeding €2 million — may fall outside some service obligations.

The operating entity is expected to be a microenterprise; the position is confirmed once the entity is registered and assessed by counsel:

Expected: a microenterprise. Once registered, the operating entity will be a non-profit organisation governed by trustees, with fewer than 10 staff, so it is expected to meet the microenterprise threshold; where the EAA applies to this service, the microenterprise service exemption may then be available. to be confirmed
Otherwise, the expectation is that we meet WCAG 2.2 AA and publish this accessibility statement.

Note that the microenterprise consideration is an EU/EAA point. It does not remove our own commitment to accessibility for our UK users, nor any applicable UK obligations.

4. Current conformance status — honest

We have not yet carried out a formal accessibility audit. Because of that, we do not claim a WCAG conformance level we have not tested. Stating "we conform to WCAG 2.2 AA" before an audit would be an overclaim, and we will not make it.

Current status:
This statement will be revised, with a date, once an audit has been done and a conformance level can be stated truthfully.

We will list known accessibility limitations here honestly as we discover them, rather than implying there are none.

If you (or your child) have trouble using any part of physmat.org because of an accessibility barrier, please tell us — we want to know, and we will try to help and to provide the information or function you need in a way that works for you.

6. Enforcement and escalation

If you contact us about an accessibility problem and are not satisfied with our response, you may be able to escalate it.

This section will name the confirmed escalation route once it is settled.

7. Relationship to our Privacy Policy

This statement is about accessibility, not about personal data. How we handle the personal data of children, parents, teachers, and schools — including data used by the optional AI tutor — is covered separately in our Privacy Policy.

8. Changes to this statement

We will update this statement as our accessibility work progresses and especially after an audit. The "last updated" date at the top shows the current version. We will not backdate claims: a conformance level appears here only from the date it was actually verified.
